Leeds - No Ordinary City
Yorkshire has always been a place of great industry with centuries of working pride in textiles, quarrying, mining, fishing, and steel. It was in Yorkshire that the Industrial Revolution was born with industrial centres such as Bradford, Halifax, Hebden Bridge, and Huddersfield prospering during the period in the 19th century.
Now, in the 21st century, Leeds comprises the business capital of Yorkshire and Humber and is one of the largest economic regions in the United Kingdom. The city has developed into one of the top financial and legal centres in the country, it remains the country's third largest centre for manufacturing and has emerged as a major centre for the media and communications industries. In light of its entrepreneurial business environment; its creative, committed and skilled people; its diverse cultural events, extensive choice for shopping and eating out with a cosmopolitan social scene, Leeds is clearly no ordinary city.
Being the largest city in the country of Yorkshire and Humber, it is the second largest metropolitan district in the United Kingdom with a population over 725,000. Situated midway between London and Edinburgh, just over 200 miles from London, with its own international airport, Leeds is well connected to all UK cities through an excellent rail and road network.
As a city Leeds is proud to be the home of:
- Two universities, with a combined total of over 40,000 students;
- The University of Leeds, which is ranked amongst the top 10 UK research universities;
- The Leeds Metropolitan University, home to one of the country's largest business schools;
- The commercial and financial capital of the North;
- The country's largest legal centre outside London;
- The headquarters of the National Health Service Management Executive;
- The largest teaching hospital in Europe;
- The St. James Hospital, a world leader in the treatment of liver and kidney diseases;
- The Yorkshire Cardiac Centre, one of the biggest cardiac centres in Europe.

However, it does not stop there, because Leeds is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country including the Yorkshire Dales, Bronte Country, Ikley Moore and contains more open spaces, public parks and gardens than the majority of its European counterparts, which in turn provides a huge selection of outdoor activities and pursuits.
Accordingly, we are sure that on joining us you will agree that Leeds is clearly no ordinary city and provides a close knit, friendly and hospitable Jamaat that continues to attract many young professionals to the city from other parts of the UK and abroad. On a final note, it has been said that the city of Leeds is easy to get to, but so much harder to leave. Thus, we hope that once you have been welcomed by our Jamaat you will understand why no city but Leeds should be called home.
