The K.S.I.M.C. of Leeds runs and holds a variety of activities all of which are geared towards educating and further developing individuals to live sincere and pious lives pursuant to the tenets of the Islamic faith, both morally and spiritually. In pursuing this objective the Jamaat seeks to:

  • Discourage an emotional attachment relating to matters of faith;
  • Take the view that it is imperative that we do not remain in the Islamic fold simply because we have been born into it;
  • Ensure we do not adopt Islam as a mere set of customs and rituals that we feel obliged to maintain as our ancestral heritage.

Alternatively, the Jamaat advocates the comprehension of Islam through seeking knowledge, intellectual reasoning, understanding and conviction. The activities are made possible by the enthusiasm and commitment of Jamaat volunteers who arrange and conduct them on either a regular basis or as and when the need may arise. Thus, new members to the K.S.I.M.C. of Leeds are strongly encouraged to contribute their skills and experience in enhancing and expanding the facilities and services that are provided by the Jamaat, hence the saying: “Ask not what your Jamaat can do for you but what you can do for your Jamaat”.

Thursday Evening Programme (including Dua Kumail & Majalis)

Since the Jamaat’s inception it has regularly held recitation of Dua Kumail and Urdu Majalis on Thursday evenings. In catering for the non-Urdu speaking audience our Resident Alim is to embark upon providing short English Majalis alongside his usual Urdu Majalis.

Commemorating Islamic Dates Pursuant to Shia Calendar

During the year all major Islamic dates, pursuant to the Shia calendar, are celebrated or commemorated respectively. In particular, during the month
of Muharram majalis are held on the first 12 days of the month commemorating the tragedy of Kerbala, in addition to majalis on the 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th days after Ashura. During Ramadan daily programmes are held comprising salat, Dua Tawassul, Dua Iftitar, Quran and majalis and on weekends include iftaar.

Friday Prayer

 The Resident Alim leads Namaaz-e-Juma and also provides full khutba every Friday.

Madrassa

The Madrassa is held every Saturday morning between 10.15am to 14.00pm during school term time. Four levels of classes are conducted from reception, junior  to senior covering the subjects of:

  • Quran
  • Islamic Laws and Rulings (Fiqh)
  • Islamic History (Tareekh)
  • Islamic Etiquette (Aklaaq)

All students are tested during each Madressa term throughout the course of the year to assess their knowledge and understanding of their respective subjects  by means of coursework, class tests, exams and class presentations. During the  year extra-curricular activities are organized for the students, which in previous times have included celebrating Eid with specially arranged functions and prize givings in connection to competitions and for Madressa performance and achievement; sporting activities; picnics and culminating in the end of year outing, which in recent years has included day trips to various theme parks throughout Yorkshire.

"Moving away from home for the first time to an entirely new place where I knew no one was an immense, exciting, yet scary step. What was I going to do? There were so many questions but everything seemed to fall into place. I still remember the open arms and cheery smiles that welcomed me...Yes, it was the Leeds Jamaat that made the difference. Every member, young and old, when out of his or her way to make me feel at home. I had found a home away from home, a family. My Leeds family."
